Recommendation From My High School Field Hockey Coach

“My name is Kathleen Mulholland and I have coached varsity field hockey for 20 years at Magruder HS. I was a former players for Ohio State University and set very high standards for my teams.  Elana Diestel was one of my varsity players for 3 years  and has worked at my camp during the summer for 3 years. So I have known Elana for a solid 6 years  through field hockey and in the visual arts (the subject that I teach)
As a player, Elana is the kid you dream about having on a high school team - super hardworking, team oriented and gives her all everyday in practice and in games.  She was relentless, tenacious and a thinking player which made her very coachable in her own strive to continually become a better player.  She persevered through some injuries and never let it get her down and showed that she was able to overcome adversity and still have the common goal of the team in mind - not herself  or any “pity parties.” I also hired Elana as a coach during the summer for my camps because of her communication skills, athletic skills, personality and ability to get along with the kids and work ethic.
The great thing about Elana, was not only her athletic ability but her eye for design and  enjoying every commercial art project that was put in front of her.  She always went beyond the basic requirements of the project and thoroughly enjoyed them, always adding a bit of a comic twist or point to each one. When she was finished, she would fill her sketchbooks with ideas.  She truly has a passion for advertising and trying to catch the “everyday” persons eye with her artwork and designs.
Elana is the type of person who is willing to take chances with idea’s, tweak them when needed and just keep working through concepts.  She’s a team player and has a true interest and passion to follow in the advertising world. I have been fortunate to have known her as a player, a student and  camp employee.”

This is a picture of my co-worker Theresa and I at a music festival in September of last year. Last semester we worked for the 9:30 Club which is a concert venue in the District of Columbia. Our job at concerts and festivals was to engage concert-goers by talking to them and getting them excited about upcoming shows. We had to be fun but professional at the same time. I also participated in brainstorming about how to better promote the club. I believe that my experiences with the 9:30 Club further qualify me for the Marketing Strategist Ultimate Intern and I look forward to seeing who prevails!

Recommendations From My Fellow Caps Game Night Interns

Elana is an ideal candidate for the Under Armour marketing intern program. She is extremely motivated, responsible and goal oriented. She knows how to work in a high pressure and professional environment.

She works well with others. I remember when I first started interning with her at the Washington Capitals. I joined the “intern crew” mid season and I was very impressed with her ability to make me feel welcome and to show me the ropes.

Finally,  Elana is very creative. She has a natural eye for design and for creating artwork and products that appeal to others.  She will prove to be a huge asset to Under Armour’s marketing department.

Elana is an amazing person to work with. She gives 110% into everything she does and always completes her work with a smile on her face. She boosts the whole teams’ morale with her positive attitude and bright outlooks no matter what the situation. Her dedication, work ethic, loyalty, and passion to commitment will help any company grow. It is has been nothing but a pleasure to work with her.

I have had the pleasure of working with Elana Diestel for a year and a half. I first met her when I began interning for the Washington Capitals in September, 2010. She is dedicated, hard-working, and a very fast learner. Elana would always be at work early and be one of the last to leave. I have enjoyed working with her throughout the past year and a half and working for the Washington Capitals would not have been the same without her. She made the environment fun while also being incredibly responsible and helping me learn more about running the fan experience programs. She is so driven and I know that whatever opportunities come before her she will do her best to make them a reality.

I know how to manage individual tasks but I love teams! I love having a great dynamic with my co-workers because it makes work more fun. My Caps co-workers and I call ourselves the “intern crew” because we have become such good friends and because we are proud to work together in effort to represent the Washington Capitals Organization it the best, most professional way. I hope I prove to you that I have what it takes to be an Under Armour Ultimate Intern because I would love to work with the other Ultimate Intern Teammates. I would strive to create a fun, positive, and professional environment for us to work in. I would work to make our Under Armour “intern crew” one of the best Under Armour has had or will ever have. I will put my everything into this internship, if selected, because I know that I have what it takes to be an Under Armour Intern!

As one of the Game Day Interns for the Washington Capitals I help out with game night giveaways when I am needed. For one of last season’s playoff giveaways I helped pass out hundreds of foam hockey stick “hats.” We were asked to wear one while we passed them out so people knew they were for your head and that they weren’t just a miniature foam hockey stick. I was the only one I saw who actually wore one of these “hats.” I believe that this shows that I am a team player and that I like to make work fun. I LOVE teams. My friend Katie (right) and I were a team at one of the main entrances of the Verizon Center. I hope that through these Tumblr posts you get to understand who I am as a person and how I would make a great Under Armour Ultimate Intern Teammate!

You Are Never Going to Keep Me Down!

In eighth grade my parents got a divorce. It was not amicable or pretty. In fact it was very ugly.  So ugly that four years afterwards I slumped into a depression so bad that I literally didn’t get out of bed for a week and then depended on three different medicines to stay “happy.” Also In eighth grade I was diagnosed with what is basically low blood pressure.  Imagine something you love and then imagine your body telling you that you can’t do it.  My body told me I couldn’t run or play field hockey like everyone else because I would pass out.  My body taught me that if I ran behind the leaders in CODs (sprint laps around the field done in sets) and diagonals then I would be okay.  This was my thought process until my high school field hockey coach (Kathy) taught me otherwise.

Without Kathy, my life would have turned into a huge downward spiral. Before her lessons, I couldn’t control anything in my life.  I couldn’t control my parents’ bickering. I couldn’t control getting to Saturday morning practices on time.  I was falling behind in school and I was collapsing on the field hockey field.  In short, I was a mess!

Field hockey and Kathy turned some things around for me though. Kathy was always there for me if I needed to talk or just hear one of her funny stories to make me laugh. Kathy taught me that when I am running I should be working as hard as I could because I can control how good of a field hockey player I become.  My senior year of high school, I started pushing beyond the “limits” I thought I had.  I pushed them when I started leading diagonals and CODs.  I also pushed them when I tried to make up a COD too soon after feeling very lightheaded thus collapsing half way through.  But even though I couldn’t finish that COD I was proud of myself because I was doing the best that I could under the given circumstances.  Kathy in a sense taught me to not let thoughts of what I “can’t” do to get in the way of what I can do. From her, I learned to step outside my comfort zone because doing so would be rewarding.

Working hard paid off when my team beat undefeated teams. It paid off when I was named most athletic during senior superlatives. It also paid off when I got named to Montgomery County, Maryland’s All County Field Hockey Team.

The adversity that I have faced has knocked me down a few times but in the words of Chumbawamba, “I get knocked down but I get up again. You’re never going to keep me down.”

Not All Heroes Wear Capes. Kathy is a hero to many people she coached. She is my hero for teaching me very important lessons when I needed them the most. These lessons have made me a stronger person. My strength makes me a fierce contender for the Ultimate Intern Team.
